What is Anonymous FTP
Anonymous FTP allows anyone FTP connections to your site, to upload or download files, without having to log in with a username and password.
Anonymous FTP access is controlled through Anonymous FTP in cPanel. Settings allow you to enable or disable anonymous access at any time. You can allow uploading to any particular folder created in the public_ftp directory of your account.
Security Notes:
- Allowing anonymous access to your site may present a security risk.
- You are responsible for content and use by anonymous users.
- You must set individual directories with the proper permissions for those directories to which you do not want users to have access.
- You can set up individual users with an ftp account and allow access to particular directories or the site as a whole. This may be preferable to allowing anonymous access.
- You are responsible for content and use by anonymous users.
- The existence of the Anonymous FTP account in
[ FTP Accounts ] does not mean that anonymous access is enabled. Access must be enabled as described below.
ANONYMOUS FTP ENABLE/DISABLE
To ENABLE Anonymous FTP access: (see
screenshot)
Click the Anonymous FTP Enable/Disable icon in cPanel.- Put a check in the first box to allow anonymous access to view, download and delete files in your
public_ftpdirectory. - Putting a check in the next line allows anonymous access to upload files to the incoming folder in the
public_ftpfolder. - Both boxes must be checked to allow uploading of files.
- Save Settings.
- Anonymous FTP Welcome Message is optional. Type in the box a message or instructions for your users when they log into your
public_ftpfolder. - Save Settings.
To DISABLE Anonymous FTP access:
- Remove the check(s) from appropriate box(es).

- Connecting Errors: Problems with connecting to FTP are usually due to improper permissions settings. Check the settings of Anonymous FTP in your cPanel to ensure that it is configured correctly.
